Canterbury is the perfect city for an English language summer school for teenagers. It is easy to find your way around and the pedestrian High Street and the ancient city walls are convenient landmarks. It is a vibrant, student city with modern shops and facilities standing side by side with historical buildings and churches. There is a high speed rail link to London, which makes Canterbury less than an hour away from the capital.
Surrounding Canterbury are farmlands and orchards of fruit and hops. The Stour River runs through the centre of the city and into the North Sea at Sandwich. You can take a short boat cruise on a traditional ‘punt’ down the river and see where witches were tried and dunked in the river on the ‘ducking stool’ at the time of the Inquisition, a rather grim period in the city’s past. On the other hand, Canterbury Cathedral is an awesome testimony to gothic architecture and the stained glass windows are breathtakingly beautiful. Here too though, is another site of a gruesome event in English history. Deep inside the cathedral is the very spot on which Thomas a Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered by King Henry VIII’s knights.
In the streets again, you can walk through traditional English markets and buy English memorabilia from the barrows of street traders or be entertained by buskers young and old. Canterbury has a cultural buzz to it, with many international students and visitors rubbing shoulders with the locals. Come to Canterbury and be a local!
